Hydro[Commons] winter 2022
crit: Peter Halquist

This project draws on the process of water circulation in Ann Arbor and proposing a position and mediation, not an interaction in this circle. Here I’m taking an alternative critical position, now, sewage and pipes are exposed and are the driving force of the design process and become the materiality of the site. I’m proposing an environmentally interactive architecture, reacting to environmental changes and functioning as a closed ecosystem as needed. It restores the wetland and biodiversity in the long run feeding back to nature. “Hyrdrocomons” is an invitation, that brings in the natural surroundings. The result is a multi-scalar design process that aims to ‘resocialize’ water within the public spaces of the visitor center.

This project implements a filtering process from the biofilter, algae treatment, and constructed wetland to make the water network visible with a series of interconnect ed pieces of wetland, infrastructure, building, and hydrological processes. It enables the return of water to the site, which facilitates human activities along the way. It’s an invitation to appreciate the complex process and celebrate water with all ones’ senses and a chance to reflect on our relationship with water.
How do we position ourselves within the natural surroundings?
As consumers or producers? As inhabitants or supporters?
